About Hotel Neboder
Neboder is a part of the complex known under name Hrvatski kulturni dom (Croatian Cultural Centre) and, also, its tallest segment. The building is 14 floors high and dominates the central part of Rijeka. Due to its position and height, one has an open view to the entire Kvarner Bay, all the way from eastern part of the Istrian peninsula and Učka, towards Opatija and Rijeka and then to Kostrena, Kraljevica and the island of Krk The complex was designed by Josip Pičman. His work was chosen among 59 submitted projects. The hotel has been built from 1929 to 1939. Originally, the plan was to build a skyscraper that will be distinguished from any other work of contemporary European architecture. After countless problems and slow-downs that subsequently led to considerable modification of the original idea, the whole project was finally completed in 1947
With its 14 floors, this building was exactly one floor taller than its competitor, a popular Rijeka Skyscraper. Sušački Neboder (Sušak Skyscraper) soon became one of Rijeka landmarks. Nowadays, entire complex is under protection as a monument of culture. Nowadays Hotel Neboder is not living the same life as in 1950’s and 1960’s when it was the centre of the city’s night life but, nevertheless, this simple building still dominates over the city centre and remains inseparable part of the city. After an extensive refurbishment in 2007, hotel restored the splendour it once had. |
